Reverse T-3 Test (rT3)
Reverse T-3 is a product of the Thyroid gland secreted into the blood stream.
Reverse T-3 levels rise when the body is under stress as in cases of serious or acute illnesses or malnutrition.
It is a useful tool in evaluating thyroid function and metabolism. Reverse T3 can be elevated in conditions associated with a reduction in the metabolic rate, notably starvation, extreme carbohydrate restriction, chronic heart failure, and the non-thyroidal illness syndrome (also called “euthyroid sick syndrome” or “low T3 syndrome”) seen in critical illness.
